A Recap of the Quilted Coat Sewing Event

Dear Sewing Enthusiasts,

I am thrilled to share with you the highlights of our recent two-day quilted coat sewing event, held at the delightful Fabric Fanatics quilt shop in Plano, Texas. From the warm ambiance to the camaraderie shared, this event was truly a celebration of creativity and community!

Nestled in the heart of Plano, Fabric Fanatics welcomed us with open arms. The spacious and well-lit classroom provided the perfect setting for our sewing endeavour. The dedicated staff ensured everyone felt at ease, offering assistance with equipment setup and creating a comfortable environment for learning.

Introductory Discussions

I began by sharing my personal sewing journey, while showcasing the three sample coats I made in preparation for this class. I reassured each attendee that creating a quilted coat was well within their skill set which ignited excitement among participants, setting the stage for their own quilted coat adventure.

During our fitting session, several of the ladies had mock-up versions of their jackets made to facilitate discussions regarding size and overall fit. One student encountered an issue with the fit of her jacket's front section; she found the area over the bust to be baggy and unflattering. To address this, I suggested a Small Bust Adjustment, anticipating it would enhance the garment's drape over her petite figure. I provided detailed instructions and demonstrated the steps, utilizing an instructional diagram to illustrate the flat pattern alteration process. With the guidance provided, we marked out the necessary adjustments on her jacket front pattern, and the student proceeded to carefully cut the pattern apart. After implementing the alterations and reassembling the pattern, we promptly re-cut her muslin front. She then skillfully sewed the jacket muslin back together. The result was met with her absolute delight as the alteration significantly improved the fit of her fitting garment

To support our learning journey, each student received a comprehensive handout detailing the techniques utilized, including instructions for crafting "flying geese blocks" and "half-square triangle blocks." Additionally, a large step-by-step design board served as a visual guide, illuminating each block and its intricate steps, alongside various binding techniques.

The success of this event was made possible by the unwavering support and participation of the Plano Chapter of the American Sewing Guild. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the remarkable ladies of the guild, whose encouragement and enthusiasm paved the way for this enriching experience. Special recognition goes to Davie Marie Hurlburt for her steadfast support and encouragement in spearheading this foundational fashion garment class.

In conclusion, our quilted coat sewing event was a testament to the power of community, creativity, and collaboration. I am deeply grateful to each participant for their passion and dedication, and I look forward to embarking on many more sewing adventures together.

Happy Stitching
